The Kingdom of Heaven

Norma Donovan

“To want all that God wants, always to want it for all occasions and without reservations, this is the kingdom of God which is all within.”

Fenelon

I don’t want to wait till I get to heaven to experience the kingdom of God. I yearn to embrace the kingdom of heaven while I’m alive on earth. As a result, I’ve been pondering the Scriptures that describe what the kingdom of heaven is like.

It’s “like a man who sowed good seeds in his field.” (Matthew 13:24) We are to plant the fruit of the spirit, (Galatians 5:22), wherever we are, whether it’s at work, school, home or public places. This can be a kind word that encourages or praying for someone’s healing.

It’s “like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31) Looks can be deceiving; what starts out small produces big results. Give God whatever you have, no matter how small your faith, time, finances, or talents may be, and watch the outcome grow.

It’s “like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough.” (Matthew 13:33) When the kingdom of heaven is operating, our influence will greatly affect those around us. Our godliness will rub off on the world rather than us being swayed by it.

It’s “like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. It’s like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:44-46) The kingdom of God has great value and worth. Anything significant will cost us something. We need to seek the kingdom of heaven with our whole heart, mind and strength.

It’s “like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish.” (Matthew 13:47) The kingdom of God is like a magnet, drawing people to Christ. Humility, a Christ-like trait, attracts. People will want to know why we’re different when we exhibit godliness.

It’s “like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.” (Matthew 18:23) Forgiveness escorts in the kingdom of heaven. Knowing how much God forgives us, motivates us to release those who have offended us.

Repentance is our response when the kingdom of heaven is near. (Matthew 3:2) When God’s presence is palatable, our reverence for Him escalates. Fear of the Lord results in repentance, to where we can’t help but turn from our sin and turn toward God.

Let’s be God’s vessels, conduits of His love in our hurting world, to usher in the kingdom of heaven, here on earth.

“Wherever God rules over the human heart as King, there is the kingdom of God established.”

Paul W. Harrison
