“A tree is shown by its fruits, and in the same way those who profess to belong to Christ will be seen by what they do. For what is needed is not mere present professions, but perseverance to the end in the power of faith.”
St. Ignatius of Antioch
Soon gardeners will begin planting seeds in good soil that will one day bear fruit. Good soil produces much fruit, as seen in Luke 8:8a: “Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” The note in my NIV Bible says, “The quantity of increase depends on the quality of soil.” So what makes soil good?
The secret of good soil is found in Luke 8:15. “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” In order for my walk with God to yield a large and good crop, the same qualities are essential in my life.
My heart needs to be excellent and loyal toward God. I need to hear the Word of God, hide it within my heart and mind, and apply its truth to my life. And I must persevere or persist in spite of difficulties or discouragement.
Sarah Young in Jesus Always writes: “As we journey together, you will encounter many obstacles-some of which are quite painful. Expect these difficulties each day, and don’t let them throw you off course. Refuse to let adversity keep you from enjoying Me. In My Presence deep sorrow can coexist with even deeper joy.”
My Christian journey requires perseverance. I need His grace to put one foot in front of the other and to slowly but consistently whittle away at overwhelming tasks. An elephant is eaten one bite at a time. Likewise, lots of good fruit comes as I stand firm, determined to stay the course.
“By perseverance the snail reached the ark.”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon
