“Freedom means I have been set free to become all that God wants me to be, to achieve all that God wants me to achieve, to enjoy all that God wants me to enjoy.”
Warren W. Wiersbe
We all have had defining moments in our lives. Define means “to determine or identify the essential qualities” or “to characterize and distinguish yourself by the choices you make.” A defining moment is an instant that explains who God created you to be which sets in motion where God wants you to go.
My first remembrance of a defining moment came when I was eight years old. My classmate, Carol Osborne and her mom and I went to Encanto Park one summer afternoon. We took slices of bread to feed the ducks in the lagoon. Our opportunity came to nourish three ducks; two were close to the embankment nibbling on their feast while one further away received not even a morsel. Feeling sorry for the one in the back I leaned over a bit too far to stretch my bread toss and down I went into the murky lagoon. I can still see the seaweed surrounding me as I floated back up.
Feeling sorry for the forgotten one, the one who isn’t getting noticed, defines a bit of who I am. To this day I’m more likely to cheer on the underdog, the one who is less likely to win. And my concern is still to rescue those who are held captive by emotional wounding. That one defining moment expressed a core value of mine: I have to minister to those in need.
One of my favorite Scriptures, Isaiah 61:1, describes what I am to be involved in. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
I’m most passionate about intimacy with God and freedom from bondage. To those who are enslaved to their fears and addictions or are held captive by their sin, shame, rejection or offense, Jesus holds the keys to unlocking their cell doors and taking off their handcuffs. This is what Restoring Hearts Ministry is all about: setting captives free for the sake of deepening their intimacy with God. “Jesus Christ is the key which unlocks the door of the prison cell of our own making and sets us free to live in the wide world of God’s love and purpose.”
