Can You Hear Me Now? Part 3: Positioning
“He is most available to those who are most available to Him.”
I’ve learned the best way to communicate with a child is to get down on their level and look them square in the eyes. It’s all about positioning. Positioning is also essential when it comes to hearing God’s voice. I’m not talking about our posture, but the attitudes of our heart.
God loves it when we have childlike faith and complete trust that He will speak. Jesus in Matthew 11:25 said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” Having faith like a child releases belief and expectancy that God will speak.
The prophet Samuel as a little boy said, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” (I Samuel 3:9) Samuel’s attitude of humility, dependence upon the Lord and submission declared to God his seriousness about hearing God’s voice. I am more quick to spout off my requests to God in prayer than humble myself before Him asking Him to speak to me. When I do take time to sit still before the Lord I often ask Him: What would you like to say to me today?
Matthew 5:8 says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Purity of heart clears the pathway to hear God speak. Then no obstacles prevent us from perceiving the Lord’s voice. Prior to listening to God I sometimes ask the Holy Spirit to purify my heart and then repent of any sin He brings to mind.
Reverence to the Lord, with the sole purpose of obedience, positions us to hear His voice. When I fear God more than man and desire to obey Him above my fleshly desires then it’s easier to listen.
Another way to position ourselves to hear God’s voice is by making it a top priority in our lives. Sometimes when I sit still listening for Him to speak, He’ll say to me, Can we just sit quietly together and not say anything? That signifies the importance of being together.
A year ago God spoke these words: It doesn’t matter what room you’re in or where you want to sit to hear My voice. What matters most is that you take the time to sit still and hear from Me. What matters is you make time with Me a priority. And that’s what love looks like. What I like is knowing you want to be with Me. It’s not a chore or a duty and no longer a responsibility to check off your “to do” list. Your pursuit of Me is what gives you great favor with My heart. You preferring Me causes Me to prefer you.
Lastly, to hear God’s voice we need to develop the practice of sitting still. I needed training in this area since my ADD makes it difficult to silence thoughts that raced to my head’s finish line. I usually have paper and a pen nearby to jot down things I need to remember. Having these attitudes in our heart positions us to hear from God.
“Quietness is the incubator for the Spirit of revelation.”
1. Which of these attitudes of the heart do you need to develop?
2. How will you do that this week to position yourself to hear God’s voice?
