My husband and I have been cycling up hilly terrain in preparation for our Canadian Rocky Mountain bike tour this Sunday. In order to make cycling a bit easier I will get up really close to his back tire so I can draft off of him. When I do that I can’t see anything ahead, therefore I need to trust my husband’s eyes to see potential danger. I blindly trust his judgment in order to have a more enjoyable bike ride.
Five years ago we remodeled our main floor. Since I can’t visualize, I needed to place my trust in our designer’s judgment. She could see what I couldn’t. She knew what would look good and what wouldn’t. Blind faith in our designer transformed and beautified our rooms. She never steered us wrong.
All relationships require a level of trust to ensure growth in closeness. The more we trust someone, the more intimate our relationship becomes. Someone once said, “The best proof of love is trust.” Our relationship with God is no different. In fact, trust is what jump starts our connection with God in the first place, and it’s foundational to all future growth. No trust, no relationship. Blind faith, “Being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see,” (Hebrews 11:1), is a prerequisite to intimacy with God. The more we position ourselves behind Him, trusting His eyes, His judgment and care for us, the greater we will experience peace and enjoyment in life.
The times we currently live in with our nation’s economic debt and the world’s political unrest only encourage fear and anxiety to dominate our hearts. But we will experience peace if we do as the psalmist in Psalm 20:7 exhorts us to do. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Security comes as we align ourselves with the adage, “We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future.” I know how much my husband loves me, is for me, and wants to take care of me. How much more then, does our heavenly spouse love us, is for us and tends to our every need.
Now is the time to get so close to the Lord that we’re able to draft off of His presence. Place yourself right next to Him. Lean against His chest. Feel His strong arms wrapped firmly around you and rest in your relationship with Him. Learn from God’s Word and obtain His direction. Get to know the character of your heavenly Father, because who He is, is who you can depend on and trust. Now is the time to have blind faith and place our hope and trust in the Creator who sees the end from the beginning and who will never steer us wrong.
