Four Truths to Know and Believe About Yourself

"Remember who you are. Don't compromise for anyone for any reason. You are a child of the Almighty God. Live that truth."

Lysa Terkeurst

John and I visited a friend in Tucson, Arizona, a month ago. She gifted me a lovely necklace that combines four truths that make up a healthy identity in God. I am valued. I am loved. I am enough. I am not alone. What if we believed these truths and lived our lives based on these statements straight from the heart of God?

I am valued. I still struggle with my self-worth. I know the truth in my head but need a greater revelation of this in my heart so I can walk it out. Jesus’s death on the cross to pay for our sins is proof of our inherited worth and value. “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7).

I am loved. When you feel loved there is confidence, security, and a sense that you can conquer the world. Being unconditionally loved by God for who I am, just as I am, and not based on my performance or perfection, frees me to be the truest version of who He created me to be. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

I am enough. Shame makes us feel defective, that we are not good enough. Our “enoughness” though, comes from God. “Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God” (2 Corinthians 3:5). Part of our inheritance as a child of God, is that our Father has given us everything we need to live a godly life.

I am not alone. This is one of the most comforting truths. I can walk through anything if I believe others, and especially God, is with me. Knowing I am not alone gives me courage. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Daily repeat aloud, these four identity statements of God’s truth about yourself till you believe them and live from them. I am valued. I am loved. I am enough. I am not alone. Just as a four-legged chair needs each leg to make the chair stable; each of these truths is required to have a healthy identity in Christ. Never forget who you are.

“God never made a promise that was too good to be true.”

D.L. Moody

Relevant Reflections:

1. Which of these truths do you struggle to believe within your heart?

2. Ask God to speak to you, to give you a greater understanding.
